The Interagency Council for Applied Homeland Security Technology (ICAHST) hosted the Counter-IED Symposium that took place December 1-3, 2009 at the Gaylord National located in National Harbor, MD. This forum on Improvised Explosive Device (IED) defeat and prevention was attended by representatives of the Department of Homeland Security, Department of Justice, Department of Defense, federal, state and local government, industry, academia and laboratories. The Symposium included a technology exposition that showcased the latest technology to defeat IED attacks.
A highlight of the Symposium was a keynote speech by Secretary Janet Napolitano, U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Secretary Napolitano spoke about the importance of public-private partnerships, technology, information sharing and public education that are necessary at all levels to achieve IED defeat and prevention. Another notable speaker, Congressman Adam Smith, U.S. Congressman, 9th Congressional District of Washington State, presented the Congressional perspective on the domestic threat.

The Symposium opened the doors for interagency partners to work together to better understand the significant challenges and strategies that face counter-IED efforts. Thank you to all who participated and we look forward to seeing you next year.
